Research at the Department of Fisheries Science

The Department of Fisheries Science conducts multidisciplinary research addressing fisheries sustainability, aquaculture development, marine biodiversity, seafood quality, climate resilience, and the socioeconomic wellbeing of fishing communities. Research activities integrate field investigations, laboratory analyses, stakeholder engagement, and policy-oriented approaches to support sustainable aquatic resource management in Sri Lanka and beyond.

Successfully Completed

Mr. Suthakaran completed his M.Sc. research in 2021 on the environmental consequences of illegal fishing practices in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Ms. S. Subashini completed her M.Sc. research in 2021 on the effect of crustacean shell waste on the growth of Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) and Arachis hypogaea (peanut) plants under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Mr. Sivanandhan completed his M.Sc. research in 2021 on coastal fishery landing site pollution and water quality status of Gurunagar fishery harbour in Jaffna under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Ms. T. Suganya completed her M.Sc. research in 2020 on the development and evaluation of shelf-life of fish cake prepared from siganids and mullet species available in the Jaffna Peninsula under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Mr. N. Ragavan completed his M.Sc. research in 2020 on the fishery in Jaffna Lagoon as a first step towards sustainable lagoon management under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Mr. R. Senthilmaran completed his M.Sc. research in 2014 on feasibility studies of saltwater barrier bund in Velanai Island, Northern Sri Lanka under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Mr. N. Srirajeevan completed his M.Sc. research in 2013 on feasibility study of water quality parameters inside the saltwater intrusion barrier bund in Kopay area, Jaffna District under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Ms. P. Amuthini completed her M.Sc. research in 2013 on well water quality changes at various distances from Pannai Lagoon, Jaffna under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Mr. L. Senthuran completed his M.Sc. research in 2013 on assessment of pollution levels at Kakkaithivu Lagoon, Jaffna District, Northern Sri Lanka under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

Mr. R. Gobiraj is currently conducting his M.Phil. research on life history parameters of the critically endangered sharpnose guitarfish (Glaucostegus granulatus) and landing diversity of elasmobranchs around Mathagal, Jaffna under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Ms. S. Sivagini is currently conducting her M.Phil. research on temporal variations of plankton community and their relationship with water quality parameters in selected coastal waters of northern Sri Lanka under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Ms. Ishara Anjalie is currently conducting her M.Phil. research on spatio-temporal variation of seaweed diversity and composition in selected coastal areas of northern Sri Lanka under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

S. Thivviyan is currently conducting his M.Phil. research on the application of a risk assessment approach to appraise the status of the trawl fishery in Palk Bay, Sri Lanka under the supervision of Dr. K. Gunaalan and Prof. S. Kuganathan.

 

Mr. P. M. R. Chanaka Supun submitted his M.Phil. thesis on pelagic fish stock assessment and estimation of population parameters of Sardinella gibbosa from western coastal waters of Sri Lanka under the supervision of Prof. S. Kuganathan.
