Department History

The Department of Fisheries Science and Aquatic Resources originated from the Centre for Development of Fisheries, which was established in 1998 through the pioneering efforts of Prof. K. Chitravadivelu with the aim of strengthening fisheries education and capacity development in Northern Sri Lanka. Recognizing the increasing importance of fisheries and aquatic resources for food security, livelihoods, and regional development, the Department was formally established on 1 August 2009 under the leadership of Prof. Sivashanthini Kuganathan. The establishment of the Department marked an important milestone in advancing higher education and scientific research in fisheries and aquatic sciences at the University of Jaffna.

Since its establishment, the Department has continuously expanded its academic programmes, research activities, laboratory and field-based training, and community engagement initiatives. Today, the Department contributes actively to education, research, and sustainable resource management in areas including fisheries science, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, marine conservation, and environmental sustainability.
