Researchers surveying an aquaculture site in the Northern Province.
A multi-year project studying sustainable coastal aquaculture practices in the Northern Province has received funding from the National Science Foundation. The initiative, led by the Department of Fisheries, aims to develop low-impact farming methods suited to the region's lagoon and estuarine systems.
The project will run for three years and bring together researchers, graduate students, and local fish-farming communities to test and refine techniques that balance productivity with environmental sustainability.
Project Goals
The research team will focus on water quality monitoring, species suitability trials, and community training, with the long-term goal of producing practical guidelines that can be adopted by small-scale farmers across the coast.
"This funding allows us to move from small pilot trials to a full research program that can genuinely shape aquaculture practice in the region."
Findings from the project will be shared through department workshops, extension bulletins, and peer-reviewed publications as the research progresses.
